Council tax when you move house

When you move house, tell your local council about council tax, or the council for the new area if you have moved to a new area. Each council has its own moving form: find yours from GOV.UK, and tell the old council too if you are leaving its area.

Who this is for: anyone moving home in England, Wales or Scotland who pays council tax.

Who it is not for: Northern Ireland, which has domestic rates instead of council tax.

How to tell them

  1. Find your council on GOV.UK by postcode (GOV.UK).
  2. Use its moving form. Councils usually ask for your old and new addresses, the dates you move out and in, and who is moving with you.
  3. Check the first bill at the new address, and that the old account is closed.

Discounts and reductions

If you had a single person discount or a council tax reduction, ask the new council about it when you tell them you have moved: each council applies them to each home.

The moving house checklist has everyone else to tell, with the official source for each.

What Radar does with this

  • Life setup asks: “When does your home or contents insurance renew?” Four weeks’ notice leaves time to compare rather than roll over. Radar reminds you 30 days ahead.
  • Life setup asks: “When does the black bin next go out?” Your council’s website has the collection day and which week it is. Radar reminds you the day before.
  • Moving day goes on your Radar with the council, DVLA and the rest beside it, and Life setup asks for the new home’s dates once you are in, bin day included.

Radar reads the calendars, task lists and CRM you connect, and the dates you give it. It writes back only when you press a button, and it never sends anything by itself.

Limitations and status

  • Councils run council tax their own way: their own forms and timings come first.
  • Radar does not contact your council for you.

Also free: Radar Lite, the habit tracker on its own, for you and anyone 13 or over in the family.
